History of the Indian flag

This is a brief history of the Indian flag, it origins and why it was chosen to represent the people of India. 

The Indian Flag

The Indian flag is an integral part of India’s freedom and became a symbol of independent India. The tricolor flag is an identity of our country and symbolizes India’s journey and struggle to get freedom. The flag has continuously evolved with many changes made to it, and today we have the Indian flag that we see. This flag speaks volumes of India’s culture and heritage as well. Design of the Flag –

The Indian flag was designed back in the day by a person named Pingali Venkayya. He proposed the design to Mahatma Gandhi in 1921, who was then the leader of all India Congress. The design consisted of colors that represented the Hindus and the Muslims. Red was for Hindus, while green was for Muslims. It is said that Lala Hans Raj Sondhi offered the suggestion about the inclusion of the spinning wheel that was also associated with the movement of Gandhi to make India self-reliant by designing their own clothes. The flag had been modified several times, and it kept evolving until the final design was conceived. 

It is said that the final design was shown after India finally gained independence in the year 1947. The final design had three colors, saffron, white and green. And the spinning wheel in the middle was replaced by the Dharma Chakra or the “Wheel of the Law.” This chakra was associated with the emperor Ashoka and could be seen in the Mauryan empire’s pillars. The 1947 edition of the flag continues to date and is the country’s official flag. 

History of the Indian Flag –

A flag of any country speaks of its spirit and ethos. The Indian flag tells about the country and how it gained its independence. There have been many versions of the Indian flag designed by different people and hoisted on certain occasions. One such design was created by Sister Nivedita, who used yellow and red, which also had a vajra in the center. It was designed in the year 1904 and signified the freedom struggle. 

Another one was seen in 1906, and the design was unique. It had three equal stripes of green, red, and yellow. The green part had eight lotus flowers, and the yellow part had “Vande Mataram” written on it.  This particular flag was also hoisted in Parsee Bagan, Kolkata.

In 1917, a new flag was designed by Annie Besant and Lokmanya Tilak during the Home Rule Movement. That flag had five green and four red stripes arranged horizontally. There were stars and a white crescent as well. With the union jack (or the UK flag) in the top left corner, representing the colonial rule. 

Subhash Chandra Bose also used a flag during World War II with the colors saffron, white and green but did not have the center’s spinning wheel.
